bears in trees are a dirtbag boyband from south london, formed in 2014. They call themselves a dirtbag boyband as a way of taking emphasis out of the genre of music they produce, and into the meaning and quality behind it instead! In one of their interviews, they described their music as 'music for people who are trying to get better' and i'm certainly trying!!
I love bears in trees because their music is a violent defence of being messy and colourful and loved. the message that threads all of their songs together is the importance of human connection and getting better. they foster one of the kindest and silliest fanbases i've ever been in (hi jay and toni and rai and lukas!!) and their music held my hand through adolescence. seeing them live changed my life and seeing hundreds of people who looked like me, with ridiculous messy eyeshadow and doodles all over them made me realise just what i'd been missing, and that i'd spent so long trying to force euphoria into the conventional instead of letting my heart spill across my face.
how to build an ocean: instructions. out now.
i did once have a list of why certain songs stood out to me, but it got far too long and far too personal so press the button for a random one!!
alternatively, click here for all of my yapping! [warning, it's a long one '^^]
i have formulated the perfect bears in trees playlist to trick people into thinking its normal music. and then BAM. hit right in the internalized self-hatred and desire to get better. check it out!!
